The Gentrification of Football

As the Super League’s ‘night of chaos’ fuels the gentrification of football debate, we head to Millwall FC, one of the last working class clubs in London, to meet the players, fans and local business owners, committed to keeping its working class roots in tact.

In 2019 Millwall won their own gentrification battle against Lewisham Borough Council and the right to remain on their prime real estate in Bermondsey. Today they, alongside many other UK clubs, face a new battle as the Super League, looks determined to gentrify football on a whole new level.

This is the story of the gentrification of football told by the players and the fans and how Millwall FC is leading the fight to protect the roots of the game and all it stands for, whatever the cost.
